WILDERNESS TRAILS FAQ
What makes One.Trail different from other safaris?
Unlike lodge- or vehicle-based safaris, our Wilderness Trails are 100% on foot. No vehicles, no lodges, no fences. Just you, your footsteps, and the bush. It’s about slowing down, reconnecting with nature, and experiencing the wild in its purest form.
Is it safe to walk in the wilderness?
Safety is our highest priority. Our professional guides are trained in wildlife behavior, tracking, and bush safety. Group sizes are small to ensure a safe and personal experience.
Do I need prior wilderness or hiking experience?
No. A moderate fitness level is enough. You’ll walk 8–12 km per day with your backpack. Our guides will support you throughout, making it accessible to anyone ready for adventure.
What kind of fitness level do I need?
A moderate level of general fitness is recommended to comfortably enjoy the trail. Participants should be able to walk for several hours a day on natural, uneven terrain while carrying a backpack with personal gear, water, and food. Typical pack weight is around 15–18 kg.
We move at a controlled and unhurried pace, always adjusting to the needs of the group and setting the rhythm according to the slowest participant. Regular rest breaks are planned throughout the day, with additional pauses during warmer conditions.
Our guides carefully manage pace, distances, and rest breaks so that the focus remains on enjoying the wilderness experience in a safe and supportive environment.
Is there an age limit for the trail?
As a guideline, our trails are suited to guests aged 16 to 65 years. However, overall fitness and mobility are more important than age alone. Guests over the age of 65 may be considered on a case-by-case basis and will be required to provide a doctor’s letter confirming they are fit to undertake the trail. If you are unsure about suitability, we are happy to discuss this with you in advance.
What group size can I expect?
Trails are kept small (max. 8 participants) for intimacy, safety, and a true wilderness feel.
Is this trail suitable for solo travellers?
Absolutely. A large portion of our guests travel solo. Wilderness trails naturally bring people together through shared experiences, and our guides ensure that everyone feels included, comfortable, and supported throughout the journey.
What kind of accommodation can I expect?
Primitive Trails: Sleep under the stars with nothing but the sounds of the bush and the firelight to guide you. There are no tents or lodges – just pure, immersive wilderness. Nights are quiet, magical, and completely in tune with nature.
Backpacking Trails: Carry and pitch your own lightweight tent each night, giving you privacy and shelter while remaining fully connected to the environment. Camps are simple, small, and thoughtfully placed in pristine areas.
All trails are designed to be intimate, low-impact, and close to nature, offering an authentic wilderness experience that encourages slowing down, reflecting, and connecting with your surroundings
What about food and water?
Trails are self-catered, with meals prepared using small gas cookers. We provide food suggestions and offer gear rental options where available.
We recommend carrying at least 4 litres of water per day, ideally made up of a 3-litre hydration bladder and a 1-litre water bottle. This allows for easy access while walking and flexibility during rest stops. Guides will advise on water management and refill opportunities throughout the trail.
Water is sourced from natural water points, seasonal water digging during the wet months, or safe water drops arranged in the dry season, depending on conditions.
What about going to the toilet?
A totally normal question – and yes, I wondered the same before my first trail! There are no toilets out here, but it’s easier than you think. You either go for a pee in the bush or if needed, you’ll dig a small hole with a provided spade, and burn the used toilet paper afterwards. It might feel a bit unusual at first, but it’s all part of leaving the bush completely untouched and pristine.
What if I get my period during the trail?
No worries – it happens to everyone (every women 🙂 ) We recommend menstrual cups or discs, which are easy to clean with just water or wet wipes. If you prefer tampons or pads, just bring enough ziplock bags to keep things sealed and tidy. Remember: the only thing you’ll leave behind in the bush are your footprints.
What about cell phone reception and electricity?
There is no cell phone reception or electricity in the trail area. This is part of what makes the experience truly remote and immersive. Our guides are equipped with satellite phones and radio communication to ensure safety and emergency contact at all times. Guests are required to bring personal power banks to keep essential devices charged and are encouraged to disconnect and fully enjoy the wilderness experience.
Do you offer a shuttle service to the trail starting point?
Yes. We offer optional shuttle transfers from Hoedspruit to our wilderness trail destinations. Shuttle services must be arranged in advance.
Rates and full details for shuttle transfers can be found on the Wilderness Trails page, where pricing is listed per trail and location.
What about Malaria?
The trail areas are situated in a low-risk to medium malaria region, with cases mainly occurring during the warmer, wetter months. We plan our trails with this in mind and brief guests on simple preventative measures. We recommend consulting your healthcare provider before travel and using basic precautions such as insect repellent and long sleeves in the evenings. With sensible precautions, the risk remains low.
Do I need travel insurance or medical cover?
Yes. All guests are responsible for ensuring that they hold appropriate medical aid, medical insurance, or travel insurance cover suitable for participation in remote wilderness activities.
International guests are strongly advised to obtain comprehensive travel insurance covering wilderness activities and medical evacuation.
How sustainable are the trails?
Every participant means One Tree planted. With no vehicles, lodges, or permanent camps, our footprint is minimal. We follow a strict “leave no trace” ethic
BIRDING ADVENTURES FAQ
What makes birding with One.Trail different?
Our birding adventures focus on coverage and habitat access. Walking allows us to work areas thoroughly, spend more time listening and observing, and increase opportunities for quality sightings across Zululand’s diverse ecosystems.
What birding experiences will you be offering?
We are offering two core birding experiences in the Heart of Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal:

Birding Tours – 6 Nights / 7 Days
A multi-day journey across diverse ecosystems, combining walking safaris and selected game drives to maximise birding opportunities.
Additional customized birding adventures will be available on request for private groups (minimum 6 people).
We plan to expand to additional birding locations in the future. Please check our website and social media platforms regularly for updates and new destinations.
When will these birding adventures start?
Dates for the 2026 / 2027 seasons will be released shortly.
The primary birding season runs from November to February, when bird activity and diversity are at their peak.
For private groups of 6–8 guests, we are happy to assist with customised birding tours and can offer exclusive dates on request (through out the whole year), subject to availability
Where will the birding take place?
Our birding experiences will be based in Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal, one of South Africa’s premier birding regions, with over 650 recorded species across forests, wetlands, grasslands, and savanna.
Additional birding locations will be introduced in the future as our birding portfolio expands.
What accommodation can I expect?
Accommodation is simple, comfortable, and chosen for location rather than luxury. Depending on the trip, nights are spent in shared tented or basic lodge-style accommodation, allowing close access to prime birding areas.

What bird species can I expect to see?
Zululand is home to a wide range of sought-after species and regional specials. While sightings vary seasonally, trips are designed to maximise opportunities for rare, range-restricted, and iconic Zululand birds, as well as the chance to add new lifers.
