Campsite South Africa Wilderness Trails

Safety & Risk Statement – One.Trail

1. Walking Safely in True Wilderness

Safety is our highest priority. While wilderness trails offer exceptional and meaningful experiences, they also take place in natural environments where risk cannot be completely removed. At One.Trail, our approach is to recognise, manage, and minimise risk through experience, preparation, and disciplined guiding, without compromising the authenticity of the wilderness experience.

Our trails operate in remote, unfenced wilderness areas where wildlife moves freely and conditions change daily. Guests are invited to experience these landscapes with respect, awareness, and an understanding of what true wilderness entails.

2. The Nature of the Experience

One.Trail offers guided primitive & backpack walking trails in remote wilderness areas. These are not controlled environments and should not be compared to vehicle-based safaris or lodge experiences.
Participants should understand that:

  • Trails take place in unfenced areas with free-roaming wildlife
  • There is no immediate access to medical facilities
  • Daily activities involve walking, observation, and camping in natural surroundings
  • Conditions such as weather, terrain, and wildlife behaviour are unpredictable

This experience is designed for guests seeking an authentic, sustainable & immersive connection with the natural world.

3. Guide Qualifications & Experience

All One.Trail activities are led by experienced and professionally trained trails guides.
Our guides are:

  • Qualified and registered to operate in Big 5 wilderness areas (FGASA)
  • Trained in wildlife behaviour and risk assessment
  • Competent and licensed in firearm handling (where required)
  • Trained in first aid and emergency response
  • Experienced in operating safely in remote environments

Group sizes are kept intentionally small to ensure close supervision, effective communication, and enhanced safety at all times.

4. Wildlife Risk Management

Walking in wilderness areas involves the presence of large and potentially dangerous animals. Our guiding philosophy is based on prevention, awareness, and avoidance.
Risk is managed through:

  • Constant situational awareness
  • Careful use of wind, terrain, and visibility
  • Maintaining appropriate spacing and formation while walking
  • Calm, disciplined behaviour during wildlife encounters
  • Clear and practiced protocols for different animal situations

The objective is always to observe wildlife respectfully without confrontation.

5. Firearms Policy

In wilderness areas, guides carry a firearm strictly as a last-resort defensive tool.
Please note:

  • Firearms are carried only by qualified and legally licensed guides
  • They are used solely for emergency defence of human life
  • Their presence forms part of a broader safety system focused on avoidance and prevention
  • All firearm use complies fully with South African law

The emphasis on trail is always on knowledge, awareness, and experience – not force.

6. Medical Preparedness & Emergency Procedures

While trails take place in remote areas, safety systems are in place to respond to emergencies.
These include:

  • First aid equipment carried on trail
  • Guides trained in first aid and emergency response
  • Emergency communication systems (such as satellite or radio communication)
  • Emergency contact details provided by guests may be used if required during an incident or evacuation
  • Established evacuation procedures coordinated with reserve management and emergency services

Guests are required to disclose all relevant medical conditions, allergies, medications, or physical concerns prior to participation. This information is treated confidentially and is used solely for safety planning, emergency preparedness, and duty-of-care obligations, in line with our Privacy Policy.

By participating, guests consent to guides making reasonable emergency decisions on their behalf where immediate action is required.

7. Guest Responsibilities

Safety on trail is a shared responsibility.
Participants are expected to:

  • Follow guide instructions at all times
  • Maintain silence and discipline when required
  • Walk in designated positions and formations
  • Communicate any discomfort, injury, or medical concern immediately
  • Respect wildlife, fellow guests, and the guiding process

Failure to follow instructions may place individuals or the group at risk.

8. Physical & Mental Preparedness

Trails involve:

  • Walking on uneven and sometimes challenging terrain
  • Carrying personal gear and essentials
  • Exposure to heat, cold, rain, and other weather conditions
  • Sleeping outdoors and participating in night-watch shifts (night-watch only for primitive trails)
  • Camping under the stars with no permanent infrastructure

A reasonable level of physical fitness and mental resilience is required. Guests should be comfortable spending several days in a remote, natural environment.

Important: All participants are required to accurately disclose any medical conditions, injuries, or limitations prior to the trail. If, in the professional judgement of the guiding team, a participant is unable to safely meet the physical or mental demands of the trail, or if information has been withheld or misrepresented, the guide reserves the right to remove that participant from the trail for safety reasons. Any costs associated with early removal, evacuation, transport, or additional logistics will be for the participant’s own account.

9. Insurance Recommendation

We strongly recommend that all participants ensure that they hold appropriate medical aid, medical insurance, or travel insurance cover suitable for participation in remote wilderness activities.

International guests are strongly advised to obtain comprehensive travel insurance that covers:

  • Adventure and wilderness activities
  • Medical emergencies
  • Emergency evacuation and repatriation where applicable

10. Acknowledgement of Risk

By participating in a One.Trail wilderness experience, guests acknowledge and accept that:

  • Wilderness activities carry inherent risks
  • Wildlife behaviour and environmental conditions are unpredictable
  • Not all risks can be eliminated, despite careful planning and professional management

Our commitment is to responsible guiding, honest communication, and the highest possible safety standards, while allowing guests to experience wilderness in its true and untamed form.
